The circadian clock gene (Clock) regulates photoperiodic time measurement and its downstream process determining maternal induction of embryonic diapause in a cricket

چکیده
In response to short days in autumn, most temperate multivoltine insects enter diapause, a state which development or reproduction is suppressed arrested, serves coordinate their and physiology (or that of offspring) with annual changes the environment (i.e. photoperiodism). This mediated by measurement time based on photoperiod (photoperiodic measurement), thought be regulated circadian clock. However, some studies also demonstrate involvement clock an output process generates phenotypes associated diapause. To gain further insight into this, we silenced Clock (Clk) gene, main regulator clock, band-legged ground cricket Dianemobius nigrofasciatus (Orthoptera: Trigonidiidae). Silencing Clk gene using RNA interference (Clk RNAi) female crickets resulted abnormal rhythms under constant darkness light-dark conditions, thereby indicating central role this mechanism. RNAi females exhibited long-day oviposition behaviour, even when reared short-day photoperiodic measurement. addition, immediately laid non-diapause-type eggs, was not recorded control either conditions cannot explained terms dysfunction Accordingly, speculate could involved downstream results laying diapause-type eggs.

Induction of diapause in Drosophila melanogaster: photoperiodic regulation and the impact of arrhythmic clock mutations on time measurement.
The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster displays an ovarian diapause that is regulated by photoperiod. Newly eclosed female flies (Canton-S wild type) exposed to short days (less than 14 hr of light per day) at 12 degrees C (or 10 degrees C) enter a fairly shallow reproductive diapause. Females exposed to long days (16 hr of light per day) at the same low temperature undergo ovarian maturation. T...
متن کاملSilencing the circadian clock gene Clock using RNAi reveals dissociation of the circatidal clock from the circadian clock in the mangrove cricket.
Whether a clock that generates a circatidal rhythm shares the same elements as the circadian clock is not fully understood. The mangrove cricket, Apteronemobius asahinai, shows simultaneously two endogenous rhythms in its locomotor activity; the circatidal rhythm generates active and inactive phases, and the circadian rhythm modifies activity levels by suppressing the activity during subjective...
متن کاملDifferential expression of circadian clock genes in two strains of beetles reveals candidates related to photoperiodic induction of summer diapause.
Diapause (also known as dormancy) is a state of arrested development induced by photoperiod or temperature that allows insects to survive adverse environmental conditions. By regulating diapause induction, the circadian clock is involved in short-day-induced winter diapause but whether this is also the case in long-day (LD)-induced summer diapause remains unknown. The cabbage beetle Colaphellus...
متن کاملCircadian clock controlling egg hatching in the cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus).
Adult crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) were maintained under a 12-h light:12-h dark cycle (LD 12:12). After oviposition, their eggs were incubated under different lighting regimens at 23 degrees C, and temporal profiles of egg hatching were examined. When the eggs were incubated in LD 12:12 or in DL 12:12 with a phase difference of 12h from LD 12:12, throughout embryogenesis, 88% to 97% of hatchi...
متن کاملPhotoperiodic plasticity in circadian clock neurons in insects
Since Bünning's observation of circadian rhythms and photoperiodism in the runner bean Phaseolus multiflorus in 1936, many studies have shown that photoperiodism is based on the circadian clock system. In insects, involvement of circadian clock genes or neurons has been recently shown in the photoperiodic control of developmental arrests, diapause. Photoperiod sets peaks of period (per) or time...
